The North Atlantic inflow to the Arctic Ocean: High-resolution model study

چکیده
North Atlantic Water (NAW) plays a central role in the ocean climate of the Nordic Seas and Arctic Ocean. Whereas the pathways of the NAW in the Nordic Seas are mostly known, those into the Arctic Ocean are yet to be fully understood. To elucidate these routes the results of a high-resolution global coupled ice-ocean model are used. We demonstrate that in 1989 2004 the NAW inflow was equally divided between the Fram Strait and Barents Sea. We find that salt influx within the branches is comparable but that most of the heat entered the Arctic Ocean through Fram Strait. The model shows complex NAW circulation patterns in the Barents Sea. Two mode waters in the Barents Sea branch are identified: a halocline water produced by surface cooling at shallow convective sites in the northern Barents Sea, and bottom water formed from NAW in the southeastern Barents Sea via full-depth convection and mixing. These two modes continue into the Nansen Basin along two separate routes: one through the northern Barents Sea shelf, and the other through the southeastern ∗ Corresponding author. Overall, less than half of the NAW coming into the Nordic Seas reaches the Arctic Ocean relatively unmodified, the rest of it will have been modified in the Barents and Kara Seas with a large fraction re-circulating into the North Atlantic.

A model study of the first ventilated regime of the Arctic Ocean during the early Miocene
The tectonic opening of Fram Strait during the Neogene was a significant geological event that transferred the Arctic Ocean from a poorly ventilated enclosed basin, with weak exchange with the North Atlantic, to a fully ventilated ‘‘ocean stage’’. Previous tectonic and physical oceanographic analyses suggest that the early Miocene Fram Strait was likely several times narrower and less than half...
متن کاملFuture change in ocean productivity: Is the Arctic the new Atlantic?
One of the most characteristic features in ocean productivity is the North Atlantic spring bloom. Responding to seasonal increases in irradiance and stratification, surface phytopopulations rise significantly, a pattern that visibly tracks poleward into summer. While blooms also occur in the Arctic Ocean, they are constrained by the sea-ice and strong vertical stratification that characterize t...
متن کاملIncreasing exchanges at Greenland-Scotland Ridge and their links with the North Atlantic Oscillation and Arctic Sea Ice
[1] A global ice-ocean model shows increasing Atlantic water (AW) inflow at the Iceland-Scotland Ridge (ISR) during 1953–2002. As a result, the Greenland-IcelandNorwegian (GIN) Sea is gaining more heat and salt from the North Atlantic Ocean, while the latter is being freshened mainly by exporting more salt to the GIN Sea. The exchanges of volume, heat, and freshwater at the Greenland-Scotland R...
متن کاملArctic–North Atlantic Interactions and Multidecadal Variability of the Meridional Overturning Circulation
Analyses of a 500-yr control integration with the non-flux-adjusted coupled atmosphere–sea ice–ocean model ECHAM5/Max-Planck-Institute Ocean Model (MPI-OM) show pronounced multidecadal fluctuations of the Atlantic overturning circulation and the associated meridional heat transport. The period of the oscillations is about 70–80 yr. The low-frequency variability of the meridional overturning cir...
متن کاملCirculation of the Baltic Sea and its connection to the Pan-Arctic region — a large scale and high-resolution modeling approach
The Baltic Sea has traditionally been considered as a semi-enclosed marginal sea with little or no inß uence on the adjacent oceans. We employ an eddy-permitting, coupled ice-ocean model of the Pan-Arctic region to study the Baltic Sea, especially its circulation and property exchanges with the North Sea and other regions. Using this high-resolution and large scale model we focus here on the fr...
